Your Civic Project

Step 1:

 

Identify personal, school and community values.  Explore issues that are facing either your school or community .

Step 2:

 

Choose both a target group and address a problem or issue that you would like to change in your  school or community.

Step 3:

 

Do research on why this project is important. Has it been done before, if so was it successful or why did it fail?

Step 4:

Network with community members and organizations to create partnerships to learn more about the issue or address this need together.  (organize speakers or field trips).

Step 5:

 

 

Goal Setting - Set your project goal. What specifically is that you want to do?

Step 6:

Teamwork! Work together to accomplish your goal. Your individual skills and talents can contribute to the entire team.  Determine who is doing what task in your group and when should it be done.

Step 7:

 

Present  to school staff such as teacher or principal for approval to begin implementing your civic project

Step 8:

Gather materials and and supplies to help you with this project.  Determine your project expenses.

Step 9:

 

Inform other students, parents, community members and media about your project.  Document and track your progress

Step 10:

 

 Encourage each other to stay committed.  Keep you eye on the overall goal, execute your project and follow through to completion.

Step 11:

 

Reflect.   Look back on your experience to reflect on what worked well and what you could have done differently.

What to do if you have an idea for your school or community

Some schools have a process for this sort of thing.  So the best thing to do is to start with your teacher or school administration.  If you are still have trouble feel free to reach out to us with your idea by submitting it in the form below.

If you have a project idea, have already reached out to your teacher or organization representative, but need some help to get it off the ground.  Fill out the form below and a Civic Education Center Representative will contact and work with you to get it started.
